Virginia House is a
psychiatric rehabilitation program for persons with serious mental illness that
began in 1984 as part of Goochland Powhatan Community Services.
In 1987 the program expanded from a two-day to a five-day a week
operation with some weekend and evening activities as well.
Our basic progam hours are 9:00-3:00.
The focus of programming, which is voluntary, is to develop a person’s
ability to self-manage the symptoms of mental illness, to become as independent
as possible and to function as a part of the community.
Each participant has a specialized plan of action with goals and
objectives that are developed with the Virginia House staff.
That staff consists of a supervisor and three psychiatric rehabilitation
counselors. Our programs are
coordinated with but separate from services you receive from psychiatrists and
case managers. Our philosophy is that each individual, regardless of disability or degree of disability, has potential for independence and for being a contributing member of the community. Maximizing that potential offers consumers a better quality of life and advances the community as a whole.
