What is Behavioral Health and Wellness?

Behavioral Health and Wellness Services at Goochland and Powhatan CSB delivers services and collaborates with community members to decrease substance abuse and mental health issues within Goochland and Powhatan Counties.

Vision Statement: To engage the community in creating an environment where it is culturally normal to be emotionally healthy and drug-free.

What services are offered by Behavioral Health and Wellness?

  • Merchant Education is intended to promote voluntary compliance with the Federal SYNAR Amendment by educating retailers, management, and employees. The purpose of this education is to enforce state law prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to people under age 18.
  • Mental Health First Aid for Adults  is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. http://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/cs/

  • Mental Health First Aid for Youths is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge, or is in crisis.  Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.  The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.  http://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/cs/take-a-course/course-types/youth/

  • Workshops, consultation, outreach, and awareness activities For parents, youth, community leaders, and professionals. Please see our Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition page for more information on current initiatives.

  • Programs for youths Are offered in school and community settings. Topics include setting goals for the future, coping with divorce, managing strong feelings, and resisting pressure to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
